Radiators
Your radiator keeps your engine cool and prevents it from overheating. Understanding how your radiator works and how to maintain it can help you avoid costly repairs and keep your vehicle running at its best for years.
What Is a Radiator?
A radiator is a heat exchanger used to transfer heat from the engine to the surrounding air. It is typically located at the front of your vehicle, behind the grille, and it is designed to circulate coolant through the engine to absorb heat and carry it away from the engine.
As the coolant circulates through the engine, it absorbs heat from the engine and becomes hot. It then flows into the radiator, where it is cooled by air passing over the radiator fins. The cooled coolant then flows back into the engine to absorb more heat.
Signs of Radiator Problems
If your radiator is not functioning properly, you may experience some issues. Some of the most common signs of radiator problems include:
- Overheating
- Coolant leaks
- Low coolant levels
- Engine misfires or runs rough
- Steam or smoke coming from under the hood
